About Us
Conceptualised and created as a haven for nurturing and promoting Indian classical dance and music, Kalangan was established in September 1991 as a courtyard for the classical arts of our country. The centre today ranks as a premier institute where training in the Indian classical dance - Bharatanatyam - is imparted in the true tenets of the “Guru - Shishya Parampara”.
With over 45 ‘Arangetrams’ (full - fledged solo debut performances) of its students, the centre has carved a niche for itself as a temple of learning where the training is defined by perfection and intense practise.
At the helm of the institute is the Director, Guru Jamuna Krishnan,
one of India’s most respected performers, teachers, scholars and choreographers of Bharatanatyam.
One of the most vibrant Bharatanatyam dancers of her generation, Ragini Chandershekar is a senior teacher at the institute. She energises the teaching module with her innovative approach and vibrant choreographic style. The presentations by the trained dance company offer an exciting visual feast, marked by precision and colour. The dance company, comprising of well - trained dancers who have completed their ‘arangetrams’, is known for its aesthetic presentations.
The organization has carved a niche for itself as one of the most sought - after forums for the presentation and teaching of Indian classical music and dance. More than 300 performances by veterans as well as bright, young talents have decorated the Kalangan stage.
Art presentations are marked by strong aesthetics, adherence to classicism and a deep understanding of our artistic ethos.
